NEXT GOAL WINS, a new LGBTQ+ sports comedy-drama, hits Irish cinemas on St Stephen’s Day, December 26, 2023. In anticipation of its release, our amazing friends at Searchlight Pictures have hooked GCN up with five pairs of tickets to give away to our readers for a special evening preview screening in the Light House Cinema on Thursday, December 14.
Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok) and based on a true story, NEXT GOAL WINS follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender), hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.
Other cast members include Oscar Knightley, Kaimana, David Fane, Rachel House, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, Semu Filip, Lehi Falepapalangi, Will Arnett and Elisabeth Moss.
The 2023 film follows a British documentary of the same name, which was released in 2014, and both feature the fascinating story of Jaiyah Saelua. Jaiyah is a fa’afafine, a third-gender or non-binary identity recognised in Samoan culture. A member of the team since 2003, Jaiyah made history as the first transgender and non-binary player to ever compete in a World Cup qualifier game.

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.
GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
