Irish drag trio Haus of Wig opens Chappell Roan's Dublin show with fierce performance

Among the many faces watching Chappell Roan and the Haus of Wig perform on stage was none other than American actress Jenna Ortega.

One of Ireland’s hottest drag trios, Haus of Wig, made up of the incredibly talented Donna Fella, Shaqira Knightly, and Naomi Diamond, did the country proud on Tuesday night when they opened for Chappell Roan. The American superstar took Dublin by storm with her jaw-dropping show at the 3Olympia Theatre, making the Pink Pony Club crowd wild with her fiery performances.

Coming to Dublin for a sold-out show after her debut album The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess and song ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ topped the Irish Album and Singles and Airplay Charts respectively, the singer proved that she could have easily filled a much bigger venue.

In a social media post released ahead of her arrival in the Irish capital, the star invited drag performers to submit an application for a chance to support her at one of her gigs all across the EU and UK. Last night’s honour went to the stunning Haus of Wig, a trio of drag queens who have been delighting the LGBTQ+ community in Dublin with their fabulous shows at the Sugar Club, as well as appearances at festivals all over the country.

Chappell Roan and the Haus of Wig posted the news on social media only a few hours ahead of the gig, surprising fans with the last-minute announcement. Opening the show shortly after 8pm, the trio warmed up the stage with some thrilling performances before the American superstar took over at 9pm.

 

Speaking after the gig, the Haus of Wig told GCN: “It was the most surreal experience for all of us. Getting to open for the biggest pop star right now was a true dream come true, and her giving a platform to local drag artists just shows how incredibly invested she is in the queer community.”

“The crowd energy was next level last night, which helped the nerves knowing everyone was 100% on our side and allowed us to give the best performances we could,” the trio added. “We are blown away with the outpouring of love from the community and the people who are rooting for us. It makes us want to go even bigger and bolder than we already have!”

The entire show was an incredible success. “I’ve already had so much fun in Dublin, tonight ain’t no different,” Chappell Roan told the crowd after performing ‘Femininomenon’ and ‘Naked in Manhattan’ to her fans’ delight. Other highlights of the 90-minute show included a rendition of ‘Guilty Pleasure’ and ‘My Kink Is Karma’, a hit that the artist introduced by saying: “This song is dedicated to my ex.”

Chappell also brought a lesbian Pride flag on stage for her performance of ‘Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl’ before closing off the gig with ‘California’ and of course ‘Pink Pony Club’.

 

The latter was also the chosen theme for the night, and fans took it to heart coming decked in glittery pink cowboy hats and boots. The crowd blew the roof off the 3Olympia as dancing and singing along were obligatory at this incredible show.

Spotted in the crowd were also I’m Grand Mam’s PJ Kirby and none other than American actress Jenna Ortega, who took a break from filming Netflix’s hit show Wednesday to watch the gig from the balcony alongside her co-star Emma Myers.
