If the 2020 finale of Schitt’s Creek left you with a Dan Levy-shaped hole in your heart, then fear not, because a brand new Netflix series might be the TV show you’ve been looking for.
The programme, titled Big Mistakes, sees the Canadian actor step into the role of Nicky, a gay pastor, who, despite being out to his congregation, hides the fact that he is not celibate. In fact, he is in a secret relationship with Tareq, played by Jacob Gutierrez, who you may recognise from Dear Edward.
Meanwhile, Nicky’s sister, Morgan, played by Succession star Taylor Ortega, has found herself at a crossroads in life. Not only is she avoiding the marriage discussion with her long-term boyfriend Max (Jack Innanen), but she has also given up on her career dreams, and, at a loss for what to do with her life, returns to her hometown.
Just when it looks like life couldn’t get messier for Nicky and Morgan, they find themselves embroiled in the elaborate world of organised crime and at the whims of a frightening mobster.
The trailer gives fans a glimpse of what to expect from the series: a deeply relatable sibling dynamic, tension-filled high stakes and that distinct Dan Levy sense of humour we have come to expect from his projects. Indeed, the sneak peek is packed full of golden one-liners, and that’s hardly surprising given that Levy didn’t just deliver them, he wrote them as well, alongside Rachel Senott of I Love LA and Bottoms fame.
Ahead of Big Mistake‘s release on April 9, Levy shared that the show’s premise is inspired by his very real fear of being plunged into the criminal underworld, unknowingly. The writer and actor told Entertainment Weekly that his fascination with the topic proved to be fertile ground for a comedy show.
“Most of the time, you can’t really get out once you’re in, and that felt really scary to me, but it also felt really propulsive as a story idea for TV,” he said. “Throw two characters who ultimately prove themselves to be a liability to the organised crime dynamic, therein lies the comedy.”
