Adults, the Gen Z answer to Friends, is finally set to return with a new season after what appeared to be an uncertain future. After a successful first season, series creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw were left waiting five months for the show’s renewal.
Fans’ fears were finally put to rest with the release of the Season 2 trailer, as well as a surprise prequel episode released for free on YouTube last month. The new season boasts an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Raven-Symoné, Gaten Matarazzo, Isaac Powell and many more.
Following five friends living together in Queens, New York, the show perfectly encapsulates an entire generation while giving an honest look at that awkward period in life when you are legally an adult but somehow still feel like a kid. This is best summarised in the pilot episode, when character Sammir remarks, “Always thought the world was gonna be waiting for me, and instead, everyone’s annoyed that I’m here.”
It’s a situational comedy that offers a humorous depiction of the awkward and cringeworthy experiences of youngish people today navigating sex positivity, relationships, work and, of course, adulthood.
The end of Season 1 was left on a pretty significant cliffhanger. After entering into a marriage of convenience to help Paul Baker obtain his American visa, he and Andre shared a somewhat lingering, passionate kiss, leaving Issa, Paul Baker’s girlfriend, watching in confusion. Creators Kronengold and Shaw have promised that the cliffhanger will be addressed in the new season; will the characters navigate the resulting love triangle or is a throuple on the table?
The prequel episode, ‘Marathon Day’, shows viewers how Paul Baker, played by Jack Innanen, became part of the friend group, depicting how he and Issa met, as well as his warmth towards Andre. More importantly, it starts to sow the seeds of the complicated relationship between the three of them, setting the stage for what could be one of the central storylines of the new season.
All episodes of Adults Season 2 will drop on Disney+ on August 27. If the wait is simply too long, you can watch the completely free prequel episode on YouTube.
