At the recent D23: Disney Fan Event, the cast of the upcoming Marvel X-Men film was revealed, featuring Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier, Maya Boyd as Storm, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Indie Navarette as Rogue. The film will be directed by Jake Schreier and has a release date of May 5, 2028.
Many LGBTQ+ Marvel fans are especially excited about Kit Connor and Indie Navarette’s involvement, as both actors are publicly open about their bisexuality. Best known for starring in the recent horror film Obsession, Navarette first discussed her identity back in 2020 during an interview with Seventeen for the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why. She shared, “Being bisexual, I understand how much you could definitely keep it to yourself because it’s such a sticky subject.”
On the other hand, Kit Connor has become an icon in the LGBTQ+ community for playing golden-retriever boyfriend, Nick Nelson, in Heartstopper. The character was written as openly bisexual, though he only came out publicly in 2022 due to online pressure. He stated on X: “I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18-year-old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”
In an interview with Good Morning America, Kit Connor explained his connection with the X-Men franchise, stating, “I grew up with the original movies in a lot of ways and it’s really cool because it feels like we are doing a really different version”.
The X-Men has resonated with many queer people over the years as the mutant team fights against discrimination and violence because of how they were born, reflecting the real-world struggles of the community. The character of Cyclops (aka Scott Summers) is the leader of the team who has the power to shoot laser beams from his eyes; meanwhile, Rogue can absorb other people’s superpowers and memories.
It will be exciting to see how Kit Connor and Indie Navarette take on these classic characters in the 2028 X-Men film, and whether their queerness will factor into their interpretation.
