With the Brits airing tonight, we thought it was time to take a look back at the greatest, most important, or most bizarre gay moments in Brit Award history.

Culture Club – 1984

After storming the US, Culture Club won both Best British Group and Best British Single at the 1984 Brit Awards.

Wham and Elton John win Outstanding Achievement Award – 1986

The two big gay acts won two big Outstanding Achievement Awards for bringing British music to vast and foreign territories like China and Russia – that would probably not happen now, especially in the latter…

Samantha Fox and Mick Fleetwood – 1989

In a pairing one could only describe as ‘bizarre’, lesbian and Page 3 model Samantha Fox joined music legend Mick Fleetwood onstage to co-host the 1989 Brits. There was no chemistry and the whole night was pretty much an unmitigated disaster.

Queen – 1990

Queen won the Outstanding Contribution Award in 1990, presented by Terry Ellis. Freddie Mercury was quiet and reserved as the band took to the stage at the Brits. Mercury was, at this time, growing weaker after being diagnosed with Aids. He allowed Brian May to take the lead with their speech before concluding with “Thank you. Good night.” It was his last public appearance onstage.

KD Lang and Andy Bell Perform No More Years – 1993

Erasure’s Andy Bell joined KD Lang onstage for the gayest performance of a wonderful song – not to be outdone until a next performance just a year later…

Elton john and Rupaul, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart – 1994

Music legend Elton John was joined onstage by drag legend RuPaul for some dad dancing and an electric dance version of Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

Madonna – 1995

Madonna is rumoured to perform at the Brits tonight, 20 years after her 1995 performance of Bedtime Story remix. Looking fab in a Versace dress and surrounded by silk-clad male dancers, it was everything we’ve come to expect from her.

Billie, B*Witched, Steps, Cleopatra, Tina Cousins perform Abba – 1999

Performing Thank Abba For The Music (ugh) at the opening of the 1999 Brits was a host of ‘artists’ who have since dropped off the face of the earth. However, just combining these 90s pop princesses and Abba is enough to send us into a rainbow spiral.

Scissor Sisters Perform ‘Take Your Mama’ – 2005

Siouxie Sioux presented Scissor Sisters with the award for International Album at the Brits 2005, in a year they managed to dominate the award ceremony. They took home Best International Breakthrough Act and International Group, before performing this amazing version of their song, Take Your Mama.

Pet Shop Boys feat. Lady Gaga, Brandon flowers – 2009

The quintessential gay act of the 80s received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Brits in 2009 and celebrated with a 10-minute medley of their biggest hits. They were joined by The Killers’ singer Brandon Flowers and, to make the whole thing a tad gayer, Lady Gaga.
