Watch: Australia's 'Think of the Child'

On Saturday, two Australian channels aired an anti-marriage equality campaign – on the same night as Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras in Australia.

Made by the Australian Marriage Forum, an anti-marriage equality group based in Australia, the commercial has garnered some attention.

“We hear a lot about marriage equality, but what about equality for kids?” asks a blonde, blue-eyed mother, spouting dialogue written by Maude Flanders.

Her equally blonde, blue-eyed children are obviously smiling and laughing because they have opposite sex parents. The dad looks like he’s channelling Billy Ray Cyrus and, of course, there is a miserable-looking child of a same-sex couple.

“Children have an equal right, whenever possible, to both a mum and a dad,” says President of the Australian Marriage Forum Dr David van Gend, who is just billed as a ‘family doctor’ in the commercial.

“So-called marriage equality forces a child to miss out on a mother or a father. That’s not equality for the kids who miss out. That’s not marriage,” he adds.

The video’s description adds:

“The first TV ad in the Australian Marriage Forum’s campaign, Think of the Child. Broadcast in March 2015 during the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, this ad says there is no justice in ‘equality’ for adults which means inequality for children. Society must choose between meeting the demands of a few noisy adults or honouring the birth-right of all children, wherever possible, to the love of their own mother and their own father. We must not steal from children – again – the identity and belonging that comes with being connected to the man and woman who gave them life. That is what is at stake with laws for gay marriage, which would deliberately create motherless and fatherless families.”

Channels 7 and 9 aired the 42 second advertisement the night of Mardi Gras.

However, channel SBS declined to show the advertisement and, according to SameSame, van Gend isn’t pleased: “As I see it, this is a case of censorship by a public broadcaster of even the mildest expression of ‘unacceptable opinion’ on same-sex marriage. That is a disgrace.”
