An inspiring pro-LGBT message was unveiled during Coldplay’s Super Bowl 50 performance last night, and some commentators are not happy about it.

Beyoncé wasn’t the only act who got political at yesterdays Super Bowl halftime show – during Coldplay’s headline set, the 70,000 spectators held up placards that made a colourful tribute to what was a monumental year for gay rights in the United States, after same-sex marriage was legalised in all 50 states.

The major sports event, which is viewed by over 100 million people worldwide, was called the “gayest” yet – we assume Lady Gaga singing the national anthem had something to do with the label also.

The message was fitting, considering the game took place in Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco – home of gay political activist, Harvey Milk. While many people applauded the pro-gay message – some viewers were not too happy.

Luckily, the positive comments far outweighed the negative – with LGBT rights advocates calling it “a combination of local pride” and “the simple reminder of the country’s progress on LGBTQ acceptance.”

And as one Twitter user pointed out…
