It was one of the most controversial and mortifying performances ever on RuPaul’s Drag Race. Poor Asia O’Hara. Poor insect kingdom.
During a head-to-head lip-synch for the crown, Kameron Michaels whirled like a dervish around the stage to Janet Jackson’s ‘Nasty’ while much-adored Asia O’Hara made ready for a reveal to rival Sasha Velour’s infamous PETAL WIG. Off came O’Hara’s conical butterfly encrusted boobs and up flipped the little winged lids of the boxes on her wrists… and to the ground flopped stunned, unmoving, actual butterflies.
For those who bore witness, the only thing more appalling than the stunt gone wrong was the look of absolute terror and heartbreak on Asia O’Hara’s perfectly made-up mug.
In the scorched earth aftermath, no one could have been more apologetic. Asia released a statement saying “Despite months of research and rehearsing with a professional company, it did not go as planned. I would like to publicly offer the entire world my deepest apology. It’s important that everyone knows I would never purposely hurt any living being and have the utmost respect for all animals.”
Well, it seems like both the entire world and Asia have finally seen the funny side. In a video recorded at one of her live appearances in Brisbane, the queen had a much more positive run-in with fluttering winged things.
To the tune of the classical piece ‘Flight Of The Bumblebee’ (not quite the same, but we get the picture), Asia says to the cheering audience “Right now I’d like to introduce you to some friends of mine”. Out on the stage flutters a pair of be-winged back-up dancers to join her in a high energy low fatality dance routine. When one of the butterpeople collapses to the stage in exhaustion, Asia is on hand to deliver CPR while lip-synching ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’.
The second video shows the other butterperson miming ‘I Will Survive’ – a classic in the insect world. Then both parties forget their animosity with a well choreographed tango. If only all wars ended that way.
