A new journalism award in memory of University of Limerick student Joe Drennan was officially launched at this year’s National Student Media Awards (Smedias), held at Dublin’s Mansion House on Wednesday, April 9.
The Joe Drennan RSA Award honours journalism that focuses on road safety in tribute to the talented young writer who tragically died in a hit-and-run incident in October 2023, aged just 21. Joe had been a previous Smedia winner and a rising voice in student journalism, remembered for his passion, creativity, and advocacy.
The inaugural award winner was University College Dublin student John O’Connor, who was recognised for his impactful work related to road safety. The award was first announced in 2024, but this year marked its official launch, with the Drennan family in attendance and Joe’s sister, Sarah, presenting it.
In a recent update, the Drennan family were informed that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has lodged an appeal against the concurrent sentence handed to the driver responsible for Joe’s death. This news added further emotional weight to the evening, which celebrated not only student talent but the enduring legacy of a life lost too soon.
The awards ceremony was hosted by a line-up of notable figures, including Miriam O’Callaghan, Sharon Tobin, Miss Universe Ireland 2024 Sofia Labus and Dublin Lord Mayor Emma Blain. Their presence reflected the growing prestige of the Smedias and the importance of fostering young journalistic voices.
This year’s event featured 36 award categories, covering everything from feature writing to short films. Trinity College Dublin led the evening with an impressive nine wins. University College Dublin and Technological University Dublin each collected four awards, while University College Cork, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Galway secured three each.
The Joe Drennan RSA Award will be presented annually going forward, highlighting the importance of responsible road safety coverage and honouring a young journalist whose potential continues to inspire.
