The singer has yet to release the studio version of the song that she debuted at Gov Ball last year.

Chappell Roan teased new music in an 11-second clip from the upcoming music video for her next single, ‘The Subway’. The snippet that dropped on Thursday, July 24, arrived a day before the American singer and queer icon took to social media to announce seven pop-up concerts across three US cities in the coming months.

The teaser clip, which was posted to Roan’s official Instagram fan account, opens with a shot of a license plate from the Canadian province Saskatchewan that reads ‘THE SBWY’. The camera then zooms out to reveal a moving truck, which Roan is shown driving on a road through farmland before passing a sign that reads “Welcome to Saskatchewan”.

“I made a promise, if in four months this feeling ain’t gone / Well, f*ck this city, I’m movin’ to Saskatchewan,” the singer melodises over the video.

Although ‘The Subway’ is unreleased, the clip wasn’t the first time some fans heard the track. Roan debuted the song live at the Governor’s Ball Music Festival in New York City on June 9, 2024, before performing it again the following week at the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee.

“I’m not sure if or when it’s coming out, but I just think it’s fun to sing. To me, it kind of feels like ‘Casual’s cousin,” Roan said at the time, referencing its similar feel to her fifth most-streamed song.

In the time since her first performance of ‘The Subway’, Roan released country-inspired ‘The Giver’, which is presumed to be the second single off her sophomore album. ‘The Giver’ debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart and received critical acclaim.

The 27-year-old artist appears to be moving away from marketing ‘The Giver’ in favour of teasing her upcoming song, though. Roan was photographed in New York City filming a music video–what would be just her eighth in as many years of releasing music–and fans on social media were quick to guess it was for ‘The Subway.’ Promo posters were also spotted around the American city with messages such as “Going through a break up? Get bangs!” and “Attention! Lost wig. Last seen at the Court St Station.”

While fans were hopeful that the promo posters–one of which includes a bread tag in the singer’s signature curly red hair that reads “Best before August 1st”–and the recent teaser clip could mean her second album is coming soon, Roan has suggested otherwise in recent interviews and messages. In an Instagram caption on her recent post announcing pop-up shows in New York City, Kansas City, Missouri, and Pasadena, the singer implied that she hadn’t officially started her upcoming project yet.

“I love these three cities so much and wanted the chance to do something special before going away to write the next album,” the caption read.

Although fans may be disappointed to hear Roan’s album is still a way out, it is almost certain that new music is on its way with the studio release of ‘The Subway.’ Irish fans can hope to hear the song live when the singer headlines Electric Picnic in Stradbally Estate, County Laois, at the end of August.
