Culture Night returns in 2024 with spectacular queer highlights

Culture Night is back this September 20, and we’ve rounded up some of our favourite queer events taking place on the day.

Culture Night 2024 is set to return this September 20, bringing a rich array of events that celebrate creativity, diversity, and community. Now at its 19th edition, this nationwide festival presents a great opportunity to dive into the vibrant queer culture across Ireland.

For those of you who would like to explore some LGBTQ+ culture, we’ve curated a list of must-see queer highlights for you to enjoy!

 

1. St Peter’s Cork – Quilting The Rainbow: 40 Years of LGBTQ+
In honour of Cork’s Gay Project’s 40th anniversary, artist Billy Lingwood will lead a collaborative art project with the local community. Drawing inspiration from the Irish Names AIDS Memorial Quilt, this co-creative venture will be showcased at St. Peter’s Cork. Expect a fascinating mix of archival materials, research insights, and works in progress. The exhibition invites attendees to participate in the creative process through a pop-up workshop, making it an immersive, hands-on experience.

2. GAZE Film Festival Takeover at Outhouse
The GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival is set to take over the Outhouse LGBTQ+ Centre in Dublin, transforming it into a hub of queer cinema for Culture Night. With short films, feature screenings, and immersive cinematic installations, this event celebrates queer filmmaking from around the world. In addition to film screenings, visitors can enjoy talks and readings by artists and filmmakers. It’s a perfect mix of thought-provoking content and community vibes.

3. Concert: LIE NING Live in Dublin
Berlin-based artist LIE NING makes his Irish debut in this concert hosted by the Goethe-Institut. Known for his blend of indie, soul, and R’n’B, LIE NING’s sound delivers a unique, immersive experience. As part of the ‘Slow Touring 2024’ initiative, promoting sustainable touring practices, LIE NING will travel by train and ferry for this performance. A DJ set will follow, making it a night of music, celebration, and environmental awareness.

4. Meeting House Square: Queer Set Dancing
Experience the joy of traditional Irish set dancing with a queer twist at Meeting House Square, Dublin. Led by Alexa Moore, this class is inclusive to everyone, with a special emphasis on creating a welcoming space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. You’ll learn some steps, meet new people, and get a taste of how set dancing can be re-imagined to embrace modern identities and expression.

5. The Queens of Mockie Ah
Get ready for an explosion of drag culture as the queens of Mockie Ah debut at the Everyman Theatre in Cork. Camp Culture, a brand-new show, promises a mix of theatre, concert, and high-energy drag, paying tribute to iconic queer figures and camp culture. Expect big hair, big numbers, and even bigger personalities! Supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, this show is sure to be one of the highlights of Culture Night 2024.
