On Saturday, September 27, communities in Ireland will come together for the Diversity Carnival Against Racism, a demonstration organised by United Against Racism and Le Chéile. Bringing together civil society organisations, trade unions, political parties, activist networks and more, the event aims to fight back against anti-immigrant rhetoric and show solidarity to all minority communities in Ireland.
People are invited to gather on September 27 at 1pm at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin, with the march set to lead participants all the way to the Custom House. Titled Diversity Carnival Against Racism, the event has already been endorsed by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions as well as many community groups.
In an official statement launching the event, United Against Racism and Le Chéile said: “All people, organisations and communities in Ireland who wish to stand with us against racism are encouraged to attend. We plan to fill the city streets with a diverse display of solidarity to show that racism, bigotry and violence have no place in our society.”
The event has been organised in response to the escalating racist attacks that have been taking place in Ireland. “In recent weeks, we have seen a horrifying rise in racist violence against the Indian community, as well as other immigrant and minority communities in Ireland,” organisers stated.
“United Against Racism and Le Chéile believe we must urgently reclaim the streets. The majority of people reject the poison of racism. We see the positive contributions of migrants to Ireland. We know that there is a place for everyone on this island.”
Denouncing hateful rhetoric, the statement further reads: “The far right play on people’s frustrations with the politics of fear. They want you to believe that the crises in affordable and accessible housing, education, health care, and other services are the fault of immigrants.
“These problems have been created by successive governments who punch down on working-class people across all communities. Everyone faces these challenges together. We must stand together to solve them.”
