Last night, GCN’s My Big Fat Gay Pub Quiz packed Street 66 to the rafters in a bid to find out who were the cleverest team this side of the rainbow, and it couldn’t have ended more dramatically!
The queerest quiz ever was held to raise essential funds to support GCN and help keep your free community publication on the shelves. With some insanely awesome prizes, including tickets for the fabulous Body And Soul Festival, the luminous Love Sensation and the unmissable International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival, the teams did not come here to play. Well, they did. And they were helped along by the beautiful and hilarious hostess with the mostest, Miss Bunny O’Hare.
There was a hilariously awkward moment at the beginning when it turned out the members of team GCN who were adding up the scores were going to be set up on the stage while our glamorous hostess was…not. Bunny was very quick to bring this to the attention of the audience while the guilty parties slunk down in their seats.
Over the course of the night, those attending where quizzed with such questions as ‘What is Nadine Coyle’s birthday?’ (you either get it or you don’t!), ‘What is the name of the ‘wee lesbian’ character in Derry Girls?’ and ‘Which part of the body does Aoife McGregor refer to in her infamous voicemail?’
Now, before you think My Big Fat Gay Pub Quiz was all fun and games, there were a host of fiendishly difficult questions on LGBT+ History and, of course, the much dreaded, but surprisingly high scoring, Sports Round.
After some furious quizzing, third place went to a team who all came up as group to collect their prize, saying afterwards “It was like when Casualty wins Best Soap at the TV awards instead of Eastenders or Corrie and they’re so stunned they all go on stage.”
In the end though, when scores were added together – leave it to the queer quiz to bring the drama – two teams drew for first place!
We couldn’t have that now with those insane prizes on the line, so a representative for each team had to face off with a tiebreak question. With their team mates biting their lips in the background, each representative had to guess how many issues of GCN have there been since its beginning, the closest guess wins. FYI there have been 353 issues of GCN, meaning the guy who guessed 360 took home the bacon.
Delighted with the hugely entertaining night, our Managing Editor, Lisa Connell said: “GCN would like to thank all of our supporters, our fabulous host Bunny, the team at Street 66, quizmaster extraordinaire Richie Whtye, and our sponsors who provided the incredible prizes. Thanks to you all we raised over three thousand euro, which is vital fundraising for the publication to continue serving its community, all while having a grand old time!”
With such a brilliant night of entertainment, roll on the next Big Fat Gay Pub Quiz! This time we’ll let Bunny have the stage…
