The Supreme Court in India has refused to review it’s controversial decision to reinstate an archaic law that makes gay sex illegal.

The Indian Supreme Court ruled that the law will remain, despite being heavily criticised by activists and government ministers.

The judgement last month overturned a landmark decision by Delhi High Court in 2009 that decriminalised homosexuality, while reinstating the 153 year-old colonial era law. The law states that same-sex relationships are an “unnatural offence” and punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The Supreme Court’s order was criticised by gay rights activists who called it “disappointing” and see it as a huge blow to the LGBT community in India. The law has also drawn criticism from public health activists, who say that it will act as a barrier in the fight against HIV/Aids.

Despite widespread outrage over the ruling, several conservative political and religious groups have welcomed it.
