Warning: this article contains spoilers for Jennifer’s Body.
What’s hotter than sexy Satanic succubi? Sexual awakenings, sacrifices, Seyfried and Fox. The steamy, bloody 2009 cult classic Jennifer’s Body is getting a sequel. What’s that, didn’t Megan Fox’s character die in the last one? Shhhhhh, don’t worry about it. The people want a sequel more than they want continuity.
The film’s director, Karyn Kusama, recently confirmed to Deadline that Diablo Cody is actively working on the sequel. “I know she’s working on it right now, and I’m very excited to hear what comes of it. I know some of the bones of it, so I’m not going to give anything away, but it sounds fun and crazy like the first film,” Kasumo said regarding the sequel’s screenplay.
Writer Diablo Cody, who skyrocketed to fame with Juno in 2007, winning an Academy Award for the screenplay, followed up with the absolute belter that is Jennifer’s Body two years later. While the film initially received lukewarm reviews, it has gone on to become a cult classic, considered ahead of its time. It was also very of its time, with the characters using phrases like ‘gaylord’ as insults.
Jennifer’s Body combined horror, comedy, and queer lust at the end of the noughties. It has often been cited as the source of bisexual and queer awakenings. The film combined discourse with humour adeptly. When Seyfried’s character, Needy, says to Fox’s character, the eponymous Jennifer, “I thought you only murdered boys,” Jennifer smirks and replies, “I go both ways”.
The piece also brought up other important social topics, like how you shouldn’t idolise boys in shitty bands. The original film explores misogyny, victimhood, and how hurt people hurt people.
The 2009 film suffered from inadequate marketing, being advertised for the male gaze, to men who fancy Megan Fox. However, the film is actually a feminist work of art with queer themes, punching up at the patriarchy. “The marketing team cheapened it, like it was just, you know, a romp,” said Seyfried in a video for GQ earlier this year. Hopefully the Jennifer’s Body sequel gets the marketing it deserves!
There has been no word on financing or production yet, but the Jennifer’s Body sequel is being written, and has the cast and die-hard fans backing it. Have a look at this Q&A with Kasumo and Fox from a screening of Jennifer’s Body last week, where Fox stunned in a blood-dripping gown.
