Brace yourselves, drag fans. In a reunion longer awaited than…well, than anything really, one of the most beloved drag pairings of all time will appear together again this September at RuPaul’s DragCon in New York.
Alumni of what is generally regarded as the dullest season of Drag Race (not by me!) and firm fan favourites, Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova (although your dad just calls her Katya) and swiper of All Stars 3, Trixie Mattel, will steal hearts, minds and possibly purses from worshippers at the DragCon altar.
While full details of their panel are still top secret, the queens have promised, in true Katya and Trixie wording; “coverage you can count on from women you can trust”.
The pair didn’t seem too close during the show but later teamed up to host the YouTube phenomenon Unhhhh, a show where they talked about whatever they wanted to talk about “Cos it’s our show. And not yours.” While Katya was already one of the most beloved queens to ever grace the workroom, winning Miss Congeniality – which basically amounts to fan favourite – this new format introduced them to new legions of fans.
Unhhhh‘s popularity paved a yellow brick road to their own Viceland programme – The Trixie and Katya Show, a pretty big deal for two contestants who (until that point) hadn’t even made it to the finals of their competition.
Everything seemed to be rosy, with Katya even selling out a solo show in Dublin’s Olympia Theatre, until her real life persona, Brian McCook, announced he would be taking a break from drag to focus on his mental health.
Brian would later reveal that after filming All Stars 2, where he was robbed of the crown (our words not his) he relapsed into meth addiction, eventually suffering a heart attack brought about by pushing himself to keep up with a punishing schedule.
With news that Katya will make her return to an adoring public this August during the UK’s DragWorld event, fans have long hoped the adored pairing would reunite. So thank your lucky stars, people.
We wish Katya continued health and hopefully will get to show our support at the Olympia gig which has been rescheduled for 2019.
