A long-lost collaboration between pop icon Kylie Minogue and the late Prince, titled ‘Baby Doll’, has surfaced online 32 years after its original recording. The song dates back to 1992, when Minogue and Prince first connected backstage at his Diamonds and Pearls concert in London.
Fans have speculated about ‘Baby Doll’ for years. During a 2020 interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Kylie confirmed the track’s existence, revealing the duo decided to collaborate after their initial meeting.
She had gone to see Prince perform at London’s Earl’s Court, and got to meet him after the show.
“I don’t know where I plucked up the courage from. But at some point, I said, ‘What are you doing? What are you working on?’,” she told Apple Music.
“We hung out a bit, and I went to Minneapolis. I think he was naturally a bit of a wind-up, and he said, ‘Where are your lyrics?’ I was like ‘Um, I don’t…’
“I got some lyrics to him, and I’m not sure how long after but it was quick as we know he was quick, I had a cassette delivered to me by Prince’s driver.
“He had knocked up this song called ‘Baby Doll’. I was home alone in my apartment in London receiving this cassette from Prince,” she continued.
Despite the potential of the collaboration, the track was never completed. “Nothing ever happened to that. But I would love it one day if his estate would grant me permission to do something with it,” Kylie said at the time.
Now, a leaked version of the song has emerged on the New Paisley Generation YouTube channel, featuring Minogue’s original lyrics. The uploader’s description suggests ‘Baby Doll’ was intended to feature on Diamonds and Love, a proposed 2022 release from Prince’s Vault containing unreleased material from the Diamonds and Pearls and Love Symbol album sessions.
The release comes just before Minogue’s upcoming tour, however, according to a report from The Sun, a source close to Minogue stated she was “just as baffled as everyone else” about the leak. While the song was originally delivered to her on a cassette in the 1990s, it became part of Prince’s estate following his death in 2016. The source added, “Any leak is annoying, but fans have waited long enough to hear what the mystery song sounds like.”
