In 2023, hugely talented actors, athletes, musicians and more came out and openly shared their queer identities. With shows like Heartstopper and Sex Education, LGBTQ+ identities are more represented on screen than ever before, but publicly coming out still takes a tremendous amount of courage.

Wayne Brady, television host and comedian who came out as pansexual
@waynebrady As someone who gets to bring joy to others daily on tv, it’s been ironic that I don’t experience it as much as I’d like. I advocate mental health for all and a part of that is self transparency. In doing my work, I’ve come to see a few truths, one of them being that I want to be free to love whomever I want. This truth makes me Pan and part of the lgbtq+ family. It’s scary as hell to say out loud but here it is. The people I admire the most are the ones brave enough to be themselves unapologetically. This shouldn’t shake anyone’s world, but if it bothers you at all, that’s your business:) I was so afraid of having my manhood questioned, but screw that. A “real man” in my eyes, isn’t afraid to be honest and happy. From now on, I’ll be over here living my best life! I love you @Mandietaketa @Maile Masako @Jason ♬ original sound – Shannon
Wayne Brady is well-known for his comedy and acting roles since the 1990s. In a hilariously choreographed TikTok video at the age of 51, Wayne shared his pansexual identity in a coming out video.
In the caption, he wrote: “As someone who gets to bring joy to others daily on tv, it’s been ironic that I don’t experience it as much as I’d like…This truth makes me Pan and part of the LGBTQ+ family. It’s scary as hell to say out loud but here it is… From now on, I’ll be over here living my best life!”
Representation matters, and seeing high-profile celebrities come out increases LGBTQ+ visibility, representation and can help queer fans feel safer in their own identities. The same is true when reality television stars come out. Earlier this week, Big Brother contestant Hallie came out as trans to her fellow housemates. She had worried that some people wouldn’t be supportive, but the experience was very positive, and she said opening up was “freeing”.
These are only some of the celebrities who powerfully came out in 2023. While coming out can be scary and even dangerous, these stories help others feel accepted and celebrated.
