In an unsurprising move, Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has announced that he will be voting No on May 22.

Archbishop Martin also criticised Yes campaigners who quote Pope Francis’ support of their arguments, stating, “I feel that their knowledge of Pope Francis’ repertoire is somewhat restricted.”

“Bishops regularly speak out on social issues and their comments are often – if not always – welcomed. Indeed they are often criticised for not taking positions on social issues,” said Martin in an address to diocesan communications officers at All Hallows College in Dublin, reports The Irish Times.

He bemoaned a perceived lack of reverence to the Catholic Church’s opinions on the matter and the “level of banality in which faith in Jesus Christ and his teaching is being placed on the level of belief in leprechauns”.

“In the heated debate today this relevance of rational reflection inspired by religious belief is being reduced by some at times to a level of banality in which faith in Jesus Christ and his teaching is being placed on the level of belief in leprechauns,” he said.

Martin went on to say to say that he felt it necessary to clarify his voting position after the editor of Irish Catholic accused him of confusing the press and inadvertently giving “constant solace” to the Yes campaign.

“The referendum will come and go….But the Church’s teaching on marriage and the family and its relevance to social ethics will remain the same, no matter the referendum result,” he said.
