SOPHIE’s posthumous album was officially released on Thursday, September 26, bidding a final farewell to the trans pop pioneer. The self-titled project dropped one day early as a surprise for fans, and uses material that the late artist was close to completing as a way to honour her legacy.

It consists of 16 tracks, featuring the likes of Grammy Award winner Kim Petras, alongside Doss, Bibi Bourelly, Nina Kraviz and more. Each song holds special meaning for those involved in working on it. Hannah Diamond, featured on ‘Always and Forever’ which was recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, explained: “It ended up being the last ever day that I saw her in person.”

The album was created by SOPHIE’s family in collaboration with her record label, Transgressive, and management company, Future Classic. Announcing the project back in June, they shared: “Sophie didn’t often speak publicly of her private life, preferring to put everything she wanted to articulate in her music. It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.

“Sophie gave all of herself to her music. It’s here that she can always be found,” the statement concluded.

SOPHIE tragically passed away on January 30, 2021, as a result of an accidental fall in Athens, Greece. The Glasgow native rose to fame following the success of her singles ‘Bipp’ and ‘Lemonade’, becoming a household name in 2018 when she earned a Grammy nomination for her album Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides.

Throughout her career, the 34-year-old producer, DJ and songwriter worked with an array of stars, like Lady Gaga, Charli xcx and Madonna, all of whom continue to support her legacy.

SOPHIE, the posthumous and final album from the trans musical visionary, is on streaming platforms now, and will soon be available on double vinyl.
