Crew members on the set of hit Amazon show Transparent – which follows on the journey of a middle-aged transwoman – are reportedly angry about the set’s gender neutral bathrooms.
The on-set tension, reports notorious gossip site TMZ, allegedly stems from the fact that female staff members are uncomfortable with the idea of having to encounter men using urinals as they make their way into the bathoom stalls.
The site also reports that a fear of being labelled transphobic has stopped crew members from raising their concerns. The set has had gender neutral bathrooms for over a year, so it is unclear why the issue is now circulation around gossip sites.
It could be because the issue of trans bathroom rights is very much a bone of contention in many US states at the moment: North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act (called HB2) says that businesses must post signs designating that bathrooms and locker rooms are to be used only based on biological sex.
Transparent (starring Arrested Development’s Jeffrey Tambor) follows the journey of Maura Pfefferman – who begins the show as Mort – as she comes out to her family as trans. Maura tries to come out to her the self-absorbed family many times before she accidentally catches her married daughter getting intimate with her ex one day. Once she knows her secret, she tells her hers; and the dysfunctional family finds one secret after another being exposed.
The comedy-drama has been a massive critical success and garnered several Golden Globes, and even an Emmy.
Amazon, who produce Trasparent, have yet to comment on the issue.
