Dolly Parton's Advice for Trans Woman in 1992 Clip

In her film ‘Straight Talk’, Dolly Parton – as a talk show host – gives some of the most progressive advice to a transgender woman for a film that was made in 1992.

Dolly Parton has always been an advocate for the LGBT community – as if we have to tell you that – so it was only apt that she would star in a surprisingly progressive film.

In the video, Parton’s character, Shirlee Kenyon, receives a call from an individual who is seeking advice about transitioning to live as a woman.

Her reaction? “If you’re sure that’s what you really want, all I can say is don’t try to perm your own hair and don’t wear high heels on a soggy lawn!”

More than 20 years ago, this little-known film managed to treat a trans character – though unseen – with respect and dignity, in less than one minute of a clip.

That’s more than we can say for some people even now.

Deeper Understanding – those who posted the video – told The Huffington Post: “This movie was released in 1992 and the filmmakers could have gone for a cheap joke and made the call into an easy, offensive laugh. They do go for a laugh, but instead of being cruel, Shirlee lets the caller know that if this is something she wants, she should go for it.”

Just last year, Queen Dolly Parton – as a Christian herself – said anti-gay Christians are the real sinners, “The sin of judging is just as bad as any other sin they might say somebody else is committing. I try to love everybody.”
