Héloïse Letissier, better known as Christine and the Queens, has been gifting us with great music since hitting the scene in 2014 and she shows no signs of slowing down with her new video for 5 dollars which she described as “American Gigolo with a twist”.
It shows her going through the daily ablutions, donning some bondage and a suit before grabbing a briefcase and heading out, but what for?
She spoke to Vogue about how the video is about the illusions created in voyeurism:
“The song is so tender, so dishevelled. It’s dealing with some kind of love—the kind you can buy. It’s a literal interpretation. A note for a shag—how surprisingly soothing this can be! The power ratio runs clear, like water in your hands; it becomes a pure gesture of love, of ultimate consent,” Letissier said. “The closet is segmented into two racks—suits and bondage. From there, I wouldn’t advise to conclude anything too drastic, since you’re glaring yourself, in an obscene fashion—voyeur. The hustler is also someone who allows you to project onto him or her, before disappearing to leave you alone with your phantasms.”
“5 Dollars” is off Christine and the Queens’ forthcoming album, Chris, which is due out September 21. It follows the previously released singles “Doesn’t Matter” and “Girlfriend” with Dâm-Funk. Her last album was 2014’s debut Chaleur Humaine, which received a self-titled American repackaging in 2015.
