Joe Locke, best known for playing the role of Charlie Spring in Netflix’s Heartstopper series, reviewed some of fan’s favourite scenes from the show in a new video released ahead of the openly gay actor’s appearance on the cover of the August/September issue of Rolling Stone UK.
With the third season of Heartstopper slated to premiere in October on Netflix, this fall Locke will also star in the new Disney+ series Agatha All Along, alongside high-profile actors like Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza.
During Locke’s photoshoot for the cover of Rolling Stone, the 20-year-old actor sat down to react to some of Heartstopper fans’ favourite scenes, and even spilled some behind-the-scenes tea.
The first scene that Locke reacted to came from Heartstopper season one, episode three, wherein Charlie and Nick (Kit Conor) share their tentative first kiss. While the kiss was their first chronologically, Locke shared that the kiss was actually one of the last scenes they filmed from the show’s first season.
“I think it was nice because we were more comfortable with each other and that’s the scene that matters the most,” Locke said, describing the moment as a “very sweet scene”.
Moving on to a scene from the season one finale, Locke watched as Conor’s Nick came out as bisexual to his mother, played by Academy Award-winning actress Olivia Coleman.
The emotional scene has become a favourite among fans for the unconditional love that Coleman’s character shows her son in his moment of vulnerability.
“I think they had to shoot it a few times because Olivia was crying,” Locke revealed, admitting that most of the cast’s actors were starstruck by Coleman’s performance.
Reacting to a final scene, Locke moved forward to the finale of season two, where he watched a steamy moment between Nick and Charlie on a school trip to Paris. Despite the Parisian setting, Locke revealed that the scene was actually filmed in a school hall in Slough.
The scene, which showed Locke and Conor kissing, prompted Locke to recall the ‘coffee breath’ scandal started by co-star Conor. Originally mentioned in an interview with Attitude, Locke recalls a moment in filming where both he and Conor had had a coffee prior to filming a kissing scene. Conor later called out Locke’s ‘coffee breath’ in the interview.
“It pisses me off to this day because there was just one day we both had coffee,” Locke said. “That’s a sore spot for me that [Conor] loves to bring up”.
