On Thursday, August 1, GAZE International LGBTQIA Film Festival returns to Dublin, kicking things off with an Opening Gala screening of the new lesbian drama film Backspot. Mark your calendar and get ready to take your seat for what promises to be the greatest queer cheer adventure since But I’m A Cheerleader!
According to GAZE’s Backspot synopsis, “Cheerleader Riley (Devery Jacobs) has the chance to cheer for famous all-star squad, Thunderhawks, but she must also navigate her panic attacks, and manage her intense relationship with fellow cheerleader girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), all under the watchful eye of their take-no-prisoners Coach McNamara, played to smouldering perfection by Evan Rachel Wood. Queer girls rule the roost, competition is fierce, and female friendships are stretched to breaking in this rollercoaster ride through a world of sporting excellence.”
Backspot is the feature-length film directorial debut from D.W. Waterson and was released in US cinemas on May 31. With fantastic cinematography and long sequences caught on camera, this one can’t be missed on the big screen!
Backspot additionally comes from executive producer Elliot Page, who also stars in the upcoming film Close to You, which will screen as GAZE’s Closing Gala on Monday, August 5. For further information about the festival’s 2024 programme, click here!
