The GALAS are just around the corner and to make things even more exciting, the wonderful hosts of one of the highlights of the queer calendar have just been announced. The legendary Anne Doyle, former RTÉ broadcaster and journalist, will co-host with James Kavanagh, the writer, presenter and social media influencer.
The GALAS recognise individuals, companies and organisations for their outstanding work for the LGBT+ community. “It’s a spectacular event,” Anne Doyle shared, “a great opportunity to acknowledge people’s contributions, [and] a great opportunity for me to be there with this delightful young man.
“I will bring my usual frivolity and he will bring his normal gravity and neither of us will go for the sequins because there’ll be too much competition. We’re looking forward to a great night.”
“They are such important awards,” James Kavanagh added, “I’m delighted I get to go with Anne Doyle as my date/co-host. That’s the bit I’m most buzzing about!”
Caroline Keane, chairperson of the NXF, shared, “The GALAS have been an inspiration and source of strength for our community since their inception in 2009. We are honoured to continue the tradition in the year that we mark the 40th anniversary of the National LGBT Federation which was started in 1979 by a group of people who wanted to make a difference to the lives of LGBT+ people in Ireland and abroad. This year has seen a record number of nominations for the categories that honour individuals and groups.
“We are particularly delighted to announce Anne and James, both huge icons of the community, as our entertaining and inspiring co-hosts for the evening.”
Lisa Connell, Managing Editor of GCN, added, “The GALAS are an opportunity to recognise the ground-breaking work done within our communities and the breath-taking commitment to social change and human rights.”
Previous recipients of the GALAS include former President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, Senator David Norris, former politician Averil Power, journalist Fintan O’Toole and organisations such as An Garda Síochána, Marriage Equality and EY Ireland.
The GALAS 2020 award ceremony will take place on February 8 at the Mansion House, Dublin. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
