Anna Nolan is stepping down as Chair and Board Member of the National LGBTQ+ Federation (NXF). The news was communicated by the organisation on Friday, August 21.

Founded in 1979, the NXF is a registered charity that advocates for a future where all LGBTQ+ people can live freely and without barriers. It is also the governing board of Gay Community News (GCN), Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media since 1988.

Announcing the departure of Anna Nolan from the organisation, the National LGBTQ+ Federation shared: “We’re delighted to recognise Anna Nolan’s contribution as she steps down as Chair and Board Member of the NXF.

During her time with the NXF, Anna has played a hugely important role in helping turn ambition into action. She helped drive the delivery of our three-year strategy, contributed to shaping the next chapter of our strategic direction, and championed the establishment of the Activist Academy, creating new opportunities for people to develop their skills, confidence and leadership.

“Beyond the plans and programmes, Anna has been an important ambassador for the NXF, representing our work, championing our purpose and keeping a clear focus on the communities and activists at the heart of what we do.”

Furthermore, the organisation confirmed her successor, saying, “We’re also pleased to announce that Matt Dunne will take on the role of Chair from September 2026. His appointment reflects clear succession planning and provides continuity, while bringing fresh leadership and perspective to the NXF as we enter our next phase.

“As we look ahead to the publication of our new strategy, we’re excited about what comes next, and about continuing to work collaboratively with our communities, partners and supporters to create lasting social impact.

“Thank you, Anna, for your leadership, commitment and everything you’ve contributed to the NXF. We’re hugely grateful.”

Anna similarly shared a statement regarding her departure, saying, “After five wonderful years, I am saying goodbye to the NXF, The National LGBTQ+ Federation.

“It’s been one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable times of my life. Getting to work firstly with GCN, and then becoming Chair, allowed me to work for the LGBTQ+ community, with brilliant and passionate people. I will miss everyone on the board and GCN and am so proud of all we have achieved.

“I would like to wish Matt Dunne the very best as the new Chair. Matt is the perfect person to take the NXF to the next stage and I am so excited for Matt and the board for what is to come.”

The GCN team would also like to extend our thanks to Anna Nolan for all she has done during her time as Chair and Board Member of the NXF. Her impact was felt enormously, and we wish her all the best with her future endeavours. We would also like to congratulate Matt on his appointment, and we look forward to continuing to work with him.
