Refugees in Dutch asylum centres are to be educated about gay rights, the country’s education minister has stated in an interview.

Minister Jet Bussemaker told Trouw that refugees will receive lessons based on the Dutch secondary school curriculum. The aim is to boost safety and to make clear that anti-gay discrimination will not be tolerated in the Netherlands, said Bussemaker.

“We should not be naive,” she said. “Refugees come from countries where gay rights are not a matter of course and where women’s rights are not always accepted.” Materials will be distributed to refugee centres but it will be up to the individual centres how to incorporate them, reports Dutch News.

Last month after five gay asylum seekers from Syria, Iraq and Iran had to be rehoused after being attacked because of their sexuality in a refugee centre in Amsterdam.

According to the Coc (Cultuur en Ontspannings-Centrum) the actual number of attacks against LGBT refugees could be much higher because many are too afraid to report what happened or do not know how to go about it. State Secretary Klaas Dijkhoff rejected the idea of a separate shelter for LGBT refugees, calling it “stigmatising”, reports NL Times.
