British crooner, Sam Smith, has quit Twitter after major backlash over Oscars acceptance speech.
Sam Smith seems to have pulled a Stephen Fry and has taken a break from social media after his Oscar speech faux-pas and will be “logging off for awhile”.
On Sunday night, Sam took home the gong for Best Original Song for Spectre‘s The Writings On The Wall, beating out favourite Lady Gaga’s emotionally charged anthem, ‘Til Could Happen To You. His win alone ruffled some feathers, with critics saying Lady Gaga’s track about sexual abuse should have won, but it’s his speech that really spurred on the flurry of negative tweets.
When he took to the stage, Sam claimed to be the only openly gay man to win an Oscar. A quick Google search before the ceremony wouldn’t have gone a-miss! Many screenwriters, actors and musicians before him have received the honour – one being Milk screenwriter and activist, Dustin Lance Black.
In reference to his 2009 Oscar win, Black (fiancé of diver, Tom Daley) wrote on Twitter:
Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé. Here’s a start: https://t.co/8hGTRtIaMK

However, Smith was quick to defend himself.
Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point.

My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly.

24 hours of criticism later, Sam waved the white flag, and decided to take a step back from the Twittersphere.
I’m logging off for a while. Some Martinis shaken not stirred are definitely in order.

Well, Sam, nothing else to say but…
