Colin Collette was fired from his position of Music Director of Holy Family Catholic Community in Inverness, Illinois after announcing his engagement to his male partner on Facebook, shortly after marriage equality became legal in the state. Collette’s dismissal outraged many in the parish, where he served for 17 years.

After Church officials refused to reinstate him, he filed a federal discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity commission, claiming his termination was a form of discrimination.

In an interview Collette said: “You know, I’ve been a good and faithful servant. Just let me do my job.”

Collette isn’t the only Catholic worker allegedly fired for being LGBT in the same Archdiocese. In November 2015, Sandor Demkovich filed a complaint, saying he lost his job after marrying his partner.
