When Marvel dropped the full official trailer for Thor: Ragnarok few moths ago, the internet got pretty excited to see rock-covered creature Korg amongst the characters of the third instalment of the Thor movie franchise.

Alien warrior Korg, who is bisexual in the comics and dating his teammate Hiroim, could have potentially been the first LGBT character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But as the rumours seem to have dissipated and none of the cast or crew, including director Taika Waititi who voices Korg, confirmed they would explore the alien warrior’s sexuality in the movie, many fans lost their hope.

This has recently changed after Tessa Thompson, the actress who plays Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok, took to Twitter to respond to a thread that began with people complaining about changes to Valkyrie’s original (and much sexier) costume and confirmed that the warrior goddess, who is bi in the comic book, is indeed bisexual.

“She’s bi,” the actress wrote. “And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!”

Valkyrie, whose real name is actually Brunnhilde, is a Norse warrior goddess selected by Odin, King of the Gods, to lead the Valkyrior, a group of warrior goddesses who appears over the battlefields of mortal worshippers of the Asgardian gods and choose which of the fallen are worthy to be taken to Valhalla, the land of the honoured dead.

In the comics, Brunnhilde has had romances with both men such as Thor and Agent Venom, and women such as the archeologist Annabelle Riggs.

Whether Valkyrie’s sexuality will actually be addressed in the movie is still uncertain, with some fearing the film will not explore an LGBT narrative, as it will most likely happen with Korg.

However Thompson’s latest tweet would lead to believe Valkyrie could in fact be the first LGBT character to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With Valkyrie being bisexual and Korg also set to appear again in an as-of-yet unconfirmed new feature film, this could lead the way in terms of LGBT representation in the MCU.

With 16 Marvel superhero movies already out, we feel an openly LGBT character is long overdue and we, like many fans, hope we won’t be disappointed!
