John Mangru, an Irish designer and graduate of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, announced that he was the one behind Lady Gaga’s incredible look for the closing scene of last weekend’s SNL episode.
Mangru’s journey into design started at a young age, but his designs have already graced the likes of pop star Katy Perry and rising artist Madison Rose. Recently, Mangru made his runway debut with his own show at New York Fashion Week, cementing his reputation as a designer on the rise.
After making another significant mark in the fashion world by designing for last year’s Victoria’s Secret show, the first ever to be trans-inclusive, the Irish designer continues to take on new exciting challenges. This time, Mangru made the beautiful piece that Lady Gaga wore during the closing scene and after party of last weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Life (SNL).
Designed by Filipino-American fashion designer Zaldy for Victoria’s Secret, the piece is a crystal-covered black long-sleeve bodysuit with high shoulders and a deep neckline. The pop star wore it as she stepped out in New York City to celebrate, together with a matching headpiece designed by Betto Garcia.
Taking to Instagram, Mangru announced the news, saying: “EVERYBODY BETTER BE JUMPIN. Well, where do I begin with this one… I got to make a outfit for Lady Gaga.”
“I can’t begin to thank Zaldy for trusting me with this project to make your beautiful designs come to life. It’s truly is a honor & privilege learning from under you,” the designer added.

Lady Gaga’s appearance on SNL saw her play the roles of both host and musical guest. In the hilarious SNL-style sketches, she played an aspiring chef, one half of a pretentious couple with comedian Bowen Yang, a funeral planner, and more.
However, her talent truly shined during two live musical numbers, performing songs from her recently released new album Mayhem. Wearing another shimmering outfit, she performed ‘Abracadabra’, while her second music number saw her sing and dance to ‘Killah’, which has already become a fan favourite since the album launched.
