The Irish Times has confirmed that John Waters will “no longer be contributing columns” to the newspaper.

Waters has been writing a column for The Irish Times since 1991, with his column has appearing every Friday. In late January 2014, Waters weekly column disappeared and was replaced with pieces by journalists Olivia O’Leary and Kathy Sheridan.

At the bottom of the replacement columns was a note reporting that John Waters was on leave, however that note did not appear in today’s edition.

A spokesperson for Irish Times editor’s office confirmed today that Waters has decided to stop contributing to the newspaper.  The spokesperson added, “The editor has thanked him for his contributions to the Irish Times over the years and wishes him well in his future endeavours.”

Waters was believed to be unhappy writing for The Irish Times during the recent ‘Pantigate’ scandal, which sparked a national debate about homophobia.

Waters has not commented on his departure from the newspaper.
