Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, has promised to eliminate LGBT people in his country by the start of Ramadan

The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has vowed to eliminate LGBT people from his country before the Muslim holiday of Ramadan begins on May 26, 2017, sources revealed.

UK Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Sir Alan Duncan, told the parliament that these “anti-gay campaigns and killings are orchestrated by the head of the Chechen republic, Ramzan Kadyrov.”

“He has carried out other violent campaigns in the past, and this time he is directing his efforts at the LGBT community.

“Sources have said that he wants the [LGBT] community eliminated by the start of Ramadan.”

The threat to LGBT people in Chechnya was verified by PinkNews who were told by the UK Foreign Office that Kadyrov made the threat in a local Russian language media.

This news comes after reports alleged that gay men in the Russian territory of Chechnya were being detained, tortured in concentration camps and murdered as part of a ‘gay purge’ carried out by Chechen authorities.

In a televised meeting with Russia’s leader, Vladamir Putin, Kadyrov again publicly denied reports that he is carrying out a gay purge in his country.

At the meeting, Kadyrov highlighted the “provocative articles about the Chechen Republic, the supposed events … the supposed detentions.” Putin failed to ask any follow-up questions or indeed clarify Kadyrov’s statement,

Previously, the Kremlin denied any knowledge of these reports, while a spokesperson for the Chechen leader denied that gays exist in the country.

Eye-witness reports from anonymous men who escaped the camps revealed a shocking abuse of human rights, including imprisonment, electric shock therapy and being deprived of the right to life.

A Russian human rights activist indicated that the purge began when authorities accosted a drug dealer whose phone contained gay dating apps, explicit gay images and videos. Subsequently, authorities began to track down his network of contacts.

A protest outside the Russian Embassy in Dublin was held last Thursday to raise awareness of the plight of LGBT people in Chechnya.

Mother are holding a fundraiser for Chechnya this Saturday, 29 April with all proceeds going to the Russian LGBT Network who are using funds to evacuate gay men from the anti-gay Chechen republic.
