Ellen DeGeneres and Stephen Fry have voiced their disapproval of Brunei’s archaic “stone the gays” law, by vowing to boycott hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei.

Earlier this month, Brunei passed a law that would punish homosexual acts by stoning to death. The law has been condemned by the United Nations, which says that it “contravenes international law”.

The Dorechester Group, an international luxury hotel chain owned by the Sultan of Brunei, is now facing boycotts until the issue is resolved. The group, which owns eight hotels in Europe as well as the celebrity favourites, Bel Air Hotel and Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, came under fire by talk show host last week.

Degeneres, who recently topped Out Magazines Power 50 list, tweeted to her 28 million followers:

Actor Stephen Fry also condemned the hotel chain, encouraging his 6 million followers to also boycott the group.

In a response to the boycott, the chain released a statement saying, “We are sensitive to the fact that any such potential withdrawal of business directly impacts our employees, who represent the full diversity of society.

“We continue to abide by the laws of the countries we operate in and do not tolerate any form of discrimination of any kind.”

Prior to the introduction of the “stone the gays” law, homosexual acts were punishable by up to ten years in prison.
