The Rocky Horror Picture Show is set to become a video game this October, meaning that just like Rocky, the classic has been given a new life! The upcoming Rocky Horror Video Game, based on the iconic 1970s cult musical, will allow players to explore the mysterious halls of Oakley Court, the film’s setting, while navigating familiar scenes and iconic moments from the original movie.
The new adaptation aims to capture the essence of the original show and movie, allowing players to relive the adventures of Brad and Janet in a fresh and interactive way. With its pixelated aesthetic and nostalgic gameplay, it will offer fans of the musical and retro gaming enthusiasts a chance to experience the story in a different format, all while enjoying reimagined versions of classic songs like ‘Sweet Transvestite’, ‘Science Fiction/Double Feature’, ‘Dammit Janet’, and, of course, ‘The Time Warp’.
The trailer for the game gives a glimpse of how Richard O’Brien’s iconic score has been reimagined for the 8-bit format, teasing a retro version of ‘The Time Warp‘. With its chiptune soundtrack, the game will breathe new life into the beloved songs that have captivated audiences for decades.
In addition to the music, several key characters from the original film, including Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, will appear as playable characters. Players will guide these characters through a series of challenges and obstacles within the eerie and surreal Oakley Court.
Since its stage debut in 1973, The Rocky Horror Show has become a symbol of sexual liberation and individuality, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. The film adaptation, released in 1975, introduced queer themes and bold messages about identity and self-expression that resonated with audiences worldwide. Its embrace of nonconformity, sexuality, and flamboyance has made it a long-standing cult favourite, attracting millions of devoted fans who are all hopeful The Rocky Horror Video Game will live up to its previous standards.
Set for an October release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, Steam, and Nintendo Switch, the game promises to blend nostalgia for retro video gaming with the quirky charm of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Though no exact release date has been confirmed, anticipation is building as fans of both the film and classic platformers eagerly await this new experience.
