In a New Year’s special called The Great Festive Bake Off, the cast of Derry Girls are heading to the Bake Off tent.

Nicola Coughlin, who plays the Wee Lesbian Clare, announced the crossover on Twitter. She said:

“The News is Out. Derry Girls do Bake Off!!! Tune in on New Years Day to see if we burn down the tent.”

Joining Nicola will be the actors who play Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), James (Dylan Llewellyn), and Sister Michael (Siobhan McSweeney).

The five will be competing against one another to impress resident judges Paul and Prue to take home the title of Star Baker.

Derry Girls gained a new audience of LGBT+ fans when in the first series of the sitcom, the character Clare came out as a lesbian. Nicola Coughlan, the actress who plays her, said at the time, “I hope that we’ve played it right and I hope, for a lot of young gay kids out there, that we’ve done that kind of story justice. I know we’re a comedy, but at the same time we felt the weight of responsibility, and we wanted to do it properly.”

Coughlan also recently spoke about the power of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, claiming that RuPaul’s Drag Race UK will take aim at the nation’s bigots.

The Galway native said that the UK version of the hit reality show would be an ‘eff you’ to anyone struggling to accept LGBT+ rights, as the show contains an overt ‘political edge’ with the ‘most positive message’.

Coughlan used to attend drag performances herself at the Black Cap in Camden before it closed in 2015.

She said: “I saw Shangela Beyonce (perform), so when I saw her do Beyonce for Beyonce I was like: ‘I feel like I was there in the beginning’.

“I kind of took credit for it. I’m a superfan. I have seen a lot of the queens perform.”

The Great Festive Bake Off will hit screens on New Years Day on Channel 4.
