Glacaim Leat, a new Irish language documentary on same-sex love, LGBTQ+ weddings, and Marriage Equality, is hitting our screens next month. It’s been ten years since Ireland voted for same-sex marriage to be legalised, and made history in doing so. This contemplative documentary is a heart-warming look backwards and forwards.

The one-hour documentary reflects on the optimism felt in the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland after the success of the Marriage Equality referendum, and how that compares with the current climate. It’s not solely a retrospective. It asks us what we want the future to be like, not just for us, but for the next generation of queer people.

Glacaim Leat lays out a larger narrative by focusing on one quiet yet beautiful story. It follows the marriage of a gay couple in the Donegal Gaeltacht, Seán and David. The couple share their love and relationship with their friends, family, and the audience in heartwarming, mundane moments and a big, fun wedding.

The documentary captures moments of pure queer joy and community. It features some familiar faces and champions for LGBTQ+ rights in Ireland, including David Norris, GCN’s very own Tonie Walsh, Lisa Nic an Bhreithimh, and Ruadhán Ó Críodáin.

The piece is another reminder that Pride is a protest. Our existence is political, and queer love is an act of resistance. Embracing the Irish language is an act of anti-colonialism. LGBTQ+ rights have been fought hard for and are worth the fight.

Glacaim Leat is both a love letter and a warning”, said director Seán Ó Baoill. “It’s a thank you to those who paved the way and a call not to turn away from the fight that continues.”

Glacaim Leat was produced by Below The Radar for TG4, and will air on November 9 at 9:30pm. Have a look at the trailer below, and familiarise yourself with the lovely David and Séan before the documentary airs.
