5 queer-friendly ways to improve your Irish this Seachtain na Gaeilge

To mark Seachtain na Gaeilge, the annual festival celebrating the Irish language and culture, social media star Cian Griffin, better known as Gaylgeoirí, takes a look at queer ways in which you can brush up on your Irish. 

For anyone part of the queer community, there is also a huge intersection with the Irish language community. With rising interest in people both learning and relearning Gaeilge, here are 5 queer-friendly ways to improve your Irish for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

gaylinn Podcast
gaylinn is a new, weekly, and bilingual podcast brought to you by Headstuff and hosted by three gay friends who met through their Gaelic Football club. The podcast is roughly 70% in English, and 30% in Irish, and the hosts flip between both languages quickly, making it an accessible way to pick up new phrases to add to your vocab, all while dealing with a distinctly queer lens. Na Gaeil Aeracha Irish classes
Na Gaeil Aeracha is Ireland’s first and largest LGBTQ+ GAA club, and their hugely popular Irish-language classes have been helping more and more people learn and improve on their Gaeilge for the last few years. They run a number of terms every year, so keep an eye out on their Instagram page for more information.

Follow queer Irish-language influencers
There are so many Gaeilge influencers across Instagram and TikTok who offer plenty of content and resources to help your teanga líofacht. In addition to Gaylgeoirí, here’s a list of nine LGBTQ+ creators who put the gay in Gaeilge for you to follow!

Queercal Comhrá Events
These are a queer twist on the traditional ‘Ciorcal Comhrá’ events you might have heard of, giving people the opportunity to go and speak with people trí Ghaeilge. More info here.

This is a collective of LGBTQ+ Irish speakers who aim to improve life for Irish-speaking members of the LGBTQ+ community through events, workshops, media campaigns, art and music. More info here.
