The first trailer for The Threesome, the latest indie flick, has dropped, and it’s already causing a stir. This unconventional romantic comedy, starring Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, and Bottoms breakout Ruby Cruz, dives headfirst into the messy emotional entanglements of three twenty-somethings who find themselves in far deeper waters than they ever anticipated.

The trailer brought to us by Star Thrower Entertainment introduces us to Olivia (Deutch), a sharp-tongued, emotionally guarded woman whose long-time friend Connor (Hauer-King) has quietly pined for her for years. Enter Jenny (Cruz), a confident and unpredictable newcomer who immediately takes a shine to Connor. All of the drama somehow spirals into a spontaneous and unexpected threesome between the trio.

Instead of a fleeting mistake, this impulsive encounter becomes a defining moment in their lives and not just emotionally. Both Olivia and Jenny discover they’re pregnant. Suddenly, a reckless night of passion turns into a seismic shift, upending everything the three thought they knew about themselves, each other, and adulthood.

Critics and audiences have already begun weighing in, with the film holding a promising 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and an early 3.5-star average on Letterboxd. One user summed it up neatly: “I live for this kind of messy sh*t. Zoey Deutch, you are a wonder.”

Indeed, Deutch is winning well-earned praise for her fiery, no-nonsense portrayal of Olivia, delivering razor-sharp one-liners even in the heat of emotional chaos. Ruby Cruz holds her own with a charismatic performance that’s both enigmatic and grounded, while Jonah Hauer-King embraces his role as charming as ever.

Also turning heads is Jaboukie Young-White, who provides both comic relief and unexpected emotional depth as Connor’s loyal and yes, very gay, best friend. His presence elevates the film’s supporting cast and brings welcome balance to some of the heavier dramatic beats.

Stylistically, The Threesome seems to walk a fine line between rom-com chaos and full-on melodrama, with moments of laugh-out-loud humour clashing against raw, complex emotional showdowns. Yet, under the surface mess, the film is set to supply a surprising amount of heart. The film isn’t just about love triangles, sexual tension, or accidental pregnancies; it’s also about identity, growing up, and the often painful journey of navigating adulthood when your choices have real, lasting consequences.

With its slick trailer full of charm, tension, and wit, The Threesome looks set to be one of the year’s most talked-about indie releases. Whether you come for the drama or stay for the comedy, one thing’s certain: it’s going to be a wild ride.
